The cycle, and what each part is for

The Pomodoro Technique, described by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s, is a schedule rather than a method: a fixed block of focused work, a short break, and a longer break after a set number of blocks. The usual figures are twenty-five minutes of work, five minutes of break and a long break of fifteen to thirty minutes after four rounds, and those are the defaults here.

The work block is meant to be uninterrupted and single-subject. The break is meant to be a real break, away from the thing you were doing. The round counter matters more than it looks: it is the part that tells you when the long break is due and gives a session a shape, rather than an open-ended stretch of work that ends when you run out.

What the technique does and does not claim

There is no reliable figure for how much a timer improves anyone’s output, and a page that gives you one has invented it. The evidence on scheduled breaks and on timeboxing is real but modest and mixed, it varies by task and by person, and it does not support a specific percentage. Treat any such number you see elsewhere as marketing.

What the technique does do is procedural, and that is where its value is. A fixed block makes starting cheaper, because you are committing to twenty-five minutes rather than to a whole task. It makes interruptions visible, because you notice when one lands mid-block. It forces breaks to be taken, which is the part people drop first when they are busy. And it gives a day a unit of measurement, so an estimate can be made in rounds instead of in vague hours.

If twenty-five minutes does not fit your work, change it. The number is not load-bearing; some kinds of work need fifty minutes to get anywhere, and some people do better with fifteen. The parts that matter are that the block has an end, that the break actually happens, and that you keep the same shape long enough to know whether it is helping.

Running it in this tab

Set the focus, short break and long break lengths and how many rounds come before a long break, and the page remembers them in your browser for next time. Turn on auto start and the next interval begins on its own, which is what you want when the cycle is the point; leave it off and each interval waits for you, which is better when a block sometimes needs to run over.

The remaining time appears in the tab title as well as on the page, so a pinned tab is readable from across a desk, and a chime marks the end of each interval. As with everything else here, the reading is derived from your device clock rather than from a tick count, so a block spent in a background tab ends at the right time. Skip moves to the next interval and reset returns to the start of the cycle without losing your settings. For an arbitrary length of time rather than a repeating cycle, the online timer is simpler, and the stopwatch measures time that has already passed rather than counting it down.

常見問題

How long is a pomodoro?

Twenty-five minutes of focus followed by a five-minute break is the standard, with a longer break of fifteen to thirty minutes after four rounds. Every one of those lengths can be changed here.

Why 25 minutes?

It is the interval the technique was written around, long enough to get into a task and short enough to commit to. There is nothing special about the number, and changing it does not break the method.

Does a pomodoro timer actually make you more productive?

The research on timeboxing and scheduled breaks is modest and varies by task and by person, so no honest figure can be given. What the cycle reliably does is make starting easier and make breaks happen.

Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs?

Yes. The remaining time is calculated from your device clock rather than counted in ticks, so a throttled background tab does not make an interval end late.

Can I change the break lengths and the number of rounds?

Yes. Focus, short break, long break and the number of rounds before a long break are all settings, and they are remembered in your browser.

Is the pomodoro timer free?

Yes, with no account and no limit on how many rounds you run. Only the branded PDF timesheet document, the saved-weeks library and your own branding on a published countdown page are paid.
